What is a kasavu saree?

Kasavu (also known as Kerala saree or Mundum Neriyathum) is a traditional handwoven saree from Kerala, India. It is typically made from fine cotton or cotton-silk with a distinctive gold (zari) border called the kasavu. It is considered a symbol of Kerala’s cultural identity and is worn for festivals, weddings, and auspicious occasions.

Absolutely. Every saree on Hexalooms is handwoven by artisans in Kerala’s registered handloom clusters — Balaramapuram, Chendamangalam, Kuthampully, and Kasaragod. We never stock mill-made or power-loom products.

Each cluster has its own distinct style: Balaramapuram is known for ultra-fine cotton weave with a delicate single or double kasavu border. Chendamangalam specialises in fine-thread weaving with intricate motifs. Kuthampully is celebrated for temple-motif borders and cotton-silk blends. Kasaragod is famous for bold geometric patterns using the multi-shuttle loom technique.

The kasavu border is woven with zari thread — a fine yarn wound with metallic wire. Traditional zari uses real gold or silver; most contemporary sarees use a high-quality gold-coloured synthetic zari that retains the classic look without tarnishing. Product descriptions on our site specify the zari type for each saree.

Dry cleaning is recommended for silk and cotton-silk blends. For pure cotton kasavu, gentle hand-washing in cold water with a mild detergent is fine. Avoid wringing. Store folded with a muslin cloth layer to protect the zari border. Do not expose to direct sunlight for prolonged periods.

Kasavu sarees are incredibly versatile. They are the traditional choice for Onam, Vishu, and other Kerala festivals. They are also popular for weddings (as both bridal and guest wear), temple visits, graduation ceremonies, and formal occasions. Lighter cotton kasavu sarees are perfect for everyday wear too.

We are exploring custom orders for special occasions. Please write to us at Enquiry@hexalooms.com with your requirements — border width, colour preferences, and occasion — and we will check availability with our weavers.
